What is a speakeasy

The term "speakeasy" dates back 100 years when the production and sale of alcohol were prohibited in the United States. Places or events where alcoholic drinks were sold illegally were referred to as "speakeasies." It goes without saying that this alcohol was obtained in a shady manner, often linked to the criminal circuit.

In the nineties, the term was revived based on this history, and speakeasy bars became popular. The "new" speakeasy bars were mysterious cocktail bars that were not visible to the outside world. You had to find out through word of mouth where the bar was located. The entrance is often hard to find, and getting in happens in a mysterious way. The perfect setting for organizing a party!

3 tips for organizing a successful speakeasy

We help you on your way to that perfect, mysterious party organization! With these three tips, you can't go wrong.

1. The location

As you could see, the ideal location for a speakeasy is one where you wouldn't expect it. In the '90s, such events were organized in many surprising places: in a hair salon in Barcelona, hidden behind a phone booth in New York, or even behind a public toilet in London! Look for a unique location where you can host people and treat them to a drink. The copy room, that small storage space that never gets tidied up (and for which you now have the perfect excuse), or a long hallway... any crazy, unexpected, or mysterious-looking space can serve as the location for your party!

If you can't immediately find a mysterious location, definitely go for a mysterious entrance: entering through a "random" closet, an entrance behind a painting, or another - so-called - decoration on the wall. Let your imagination work to organize that perfect party!

2. Keep the invitation to your party mysterious

Direct the invitees to the entrance of your party, but make it clear on the invitation that they won't just get in! Ask them to wear a specific piece of clothing or accessory, or give them a password and emphasize that they won't get in without providing the secret password. Bet they'll find it exciting to come to the party you're organizing just because of this?

3. Guard the entrance like a watchdog

Once the day has arrived, follow through on what you discussed in the invitation: people don't just get in! How do you do that? You can use one of our photobooths! Imagine: your guests are standing in front of a closed door. The only thing they see is a photobooth with the following instruction: “Take a photo of yourself and your accessory and slide the print under the door.”
When your guests slide a photo under the door (showing them with the requested accessory), the door will be opened for them. Let the party (okay: gathering) begin!

Of course: if your guests have already had to search to find the entrance, you don't need to block the entrance like a watchdog, as they've already had the fun during the search.
